JOSEPH I. "JOE" LIEBERMAN
of Connecticut
Democratic Party Vice Presidential NomineeLieberman was first elected to the US Senate in a 1988 upset victory -- defeating incumbent Senator Lowell Weicker (R) in very close race. Lieberman was easily re-elected in 1994 and looks likely to win another landslide victory this fall in his US Senate re-election contest (state law allows him to simultaneously seek re-election and the Vice Presidency). Gore made history when he selected Lieberman -- an Orthodox Jew -- to be the first Jewish candidate to ever run on a major party national ticket. Ideologically, Lieberman is a viewed as a Democratic centrist. He is an environmentalist, pro-choice, pro-gay rights, pro-welfare reform, pro-school vouchers, pro-campaign finance reform, pro-capital gains tax cuts, pro-NAFTA and supported the Gulf War. More interestingly, Lieberman was the first major Democratic leader to openly criticize Clinton's conduct during the early days of the Lewinsky scandal -- and his selection may have been an effort to strategically distance Gore from the Clinton scandals. Within hours after the selection was announced, Bush campaign spokesman Ari Fleischer praised Lieberman as "a good man ... who agreed with Governor Bush on so many issues." He has proved to be an energetic and popular addition to the ticket. Prior to serving the US Senate, Lieberman was State Senate Majority Leader, lost a 1978 race for Lieutenant Governor and a 1980 race for Congress, and served two terms as Connecticut Attorney General. Because of his devout religious beliefs, Lieberman does not campaign nor work during the Jewish sabbath each week (sundown Friday through sundown Saturday) -- prompting Gore to joke on the Letterman Show that his ticket will "give their all, 24/6, to the American people." Lieberman is 58, married, has four children and two grandchildren.

THE AL GORE LIBRARY:
Earth in the Balance by Al Gore (1992). Gore published this environmentalist book in 1992 immediately after being selected as the Vice Presidential nominee. Gore discusses the problems and perceived causes of global warming, the deteriorating ozone layer, destruction of the rain forests and rising carbon dioxide levels - and sets out his proposals to address these concerns. This book was very controversial during the 1992 race: President Bush used it to denounce Gore as a "crazy, ultra radical" environmentalist while the Democrats used it to praise Gore's environmental sensitivity. An important book for understanding Gore and the issues that seemingly motivate him the most. Follow the link to read more reviews of the book. List: $14.95. Your Price: $11.96 (You Save 20%)! (Paperback).
Gore: A Political Life by Bob Zelnick (1999). Former ABC News correspondent Zelnick wrote this comprehensive -- though somewhat critical -- look at the man who currently is just "a heartbeat away" from the Presidency. Zelnick's Gore is a man of contradictions: highly principled, yet sometimes willing to cut political deals on the issues he cares about most -- including the environment. He is a self-described "screaming moderate" who is also a man with a sense of blood-feud against his political opponents, or even apolitical scientists who disagree with his policies on global warming. Ted Koppel praised the book as "a first-rate piece of even-handed reporting." Stephen Hess of The Brookings Institution said that this book "commands attention" from the voters. An interesting twist: Nine months after he began writing this book on his own time, ABC News forced Zelnick to either abandon writing the book or quit ABC (he obviously picked the latter option). List: $29.95. Your Price: $20.97 (You Save 30%)!
Common Sense Government: Works Better and Costs Less by Al Gore (1995). Written towards the end of the first term -- and featuring an introduction by President Clinton -- this was intended to be a Clinton-Gore campaign book for 1996. Not particularly exciting -- but books on the topic of governmental restructing will probably never reach the top of the best seller lists. Gore touted this book with his line that the "era of big government is over." Republicans mockingly responded that Gore now simply wants "lots and lots of little government" instead. The material in this book was the end result of Gore's blue ribbon National Performance Review Commission. List: $12.00. Your Price: $9.60 (You Save 20%)! (Paperback).
